ANTIQUE
EMBOSSING
What
is Antique Embossing?
Antique Embossing
is a technique of creating an aged surface using rubber stamping
materials. There are five basic steps: 1. Start off with
a black surface, or paint with black matte acrylic paint. Let
dry. 2. Stamp and emboss your image with Clear embossing
ink and Deep Impression clear embossing powder. This has
large granulation for a deep relief. 3. Paint over entire
surface with any color of acrylic paint. Let dry. 4. Gently
scrub away paint with a damp textured cloth to reveal the embossed
image. Leave some areas partially scrubbed for a more aged look.
5. Apply chalk pastels or rub-on metallics for highlights.

BETTER
IMPRESSIONS
I
find it difficult to make a nice impression with large stamps because
the ink dries so quickly.
There are a
couple of things you can do. Ink the entire stamp with a clear
slow-drying Embossing Ink Pad before coloring the rubber with
brush markers. You can also try inking the entire image and then
huffing on the rubber a few times to remoisten the ink before
making your impression.
Sometimes
I get marks around my stamped impression. What can I do?
On a quality
stamp the rubber and foam are carefully trimmed to minimize imprinting
of edges. The problem can usually be solved by applying less pressure
or less ink. Excess ink can be wiped away from the edges before
you make your impression. You can also snip away rubber or foam
which is collecting ink.
I've
heard the term "Partial Inking", what does it mean?
If
you start with a clean stamp, and ink only a part of the design,
you can achieve a completely different look. For example, ink
only the flowers of one image to use as an accent for another
design or omit inking the inside of a window or frame design and
draw or stamp a different image inside. Partial inking is one
way to stretch the use of your stamp collection and personalize
your stamping at the same time.

CHALK
How
can I apply chalk to my impressions and how do I keep it from smearing?
Sponges or sponge
Daubers work well for large areas. Q-tips, make-up applicators,
or small brushes work well in tighter spots. To keep your hand
from resting on or smearing your card while you work, use your
free hand to hold a ruler or large paint brush handle over your
work as a rest for your other hand. Seal your work with Spray
Sealer.

COLORED
PENCIL
How
can I achieve a textured, pebbly look?
It is possible
to achieve a pebbly look by coloring over something textured.
Art stores sell special paper for this purpose. You can also use
fabric or other materials. It isn't necessary however to color
over texture to create something interesting. Colored pencil shading
is an excellent way to create a great impression.
What sets one
colored penciled image apart from another?
Contrast. Don't
be afraid to add dark colors to shadows or leave some areas as
highlights. With colored pencils you can get a darker shade by
simply pressing harder and build up layers of color. You can achieve
a wide range of color with a few pencils by creating layers of
color like orange or red over yellow. Try using different pencil
strokes to emphasize contours.

CREATIVE
RUBBER STAMPING
What
is Decorative Rubber Stamping?
Transfering
artistic designs or patterns to almost any surface.
Rubber Stamping is a creative and fun way to make greeting cards,
bookmarks, and a variety of other craft projects. There are many
techniques to choose from including stamp pads, markers and colored
pencils. By applying ink or paint to a stamp you can decorate
just about anything from scrapbooks to T-shirts or furniture,
even walls!
What do I
need to start stamping?
Creative Rubber
Stamping can be as simple as making a selection from each of these
basic categories: Stamps, Papers (or other surface), Inks, Plus.
The more stamp images you have to mix and match, the more the
fun multiplies. The Plus category of punches, scissors etc. is
optional, but offers a variety of ways to enhance your projects.
What difference
does the paper make?
Papers are available
in many colors, textures, sizes, and decorative shapes. Some papers
are acid free and safe to use with photos for archival quality
albums. Stamping on smooth glossy papers will show off the brightest
marker color impressions. Stamping on matte papers that are soft
or textured give a quaint look that is enhanced by colored pencils
or watercolor. Embossing metallic colors on dark papers is elegant.
Many of our shapes and sizes of paper coordinate with our stamp
designs. All our cards and post cards fit our envelopes with the
decorative flap. A Papermaking Kit designed especially for rubber
stampers will give you a wonderful way to recycle papers and create
one of a kind cards to decorate with stamps.
