A large children’s book or any book you wish to alter
Copic Markers
Tape runner adhesive, glue dots, liquid adhesive
grape vines or other nest making material
thick acetate
sculpting clay
scissors

Instructions:

1.     To start off, find a book with fewer pages.  I used a children’s book with mostly illustrations.  If the book has quite a few pages you can glue them together using a tape runner to lessen the amount of pages in the book.  When you are done gluing pages you will have about 15 pages total.  You can also simply remove pages to lessen the number.  Now let the fun begin.
2.     The first and last page can be glued down onto the back of the front book cover and the back of the back book cover.  You will se a lot of the surface of this page when done, so make sure it is one you like to see.
3.     Now take the next page, which is now the new first page and follow this next step.  This will begin the base of the book.
a.     Pick up the bottom corner of the first page with your hand.
b.     Bring it up to the center of the inner binding of the book and adhere down using a strong adhesive
4.     Follow the previous steps with all the pages.  Next you will work on the images you will add.
5.     Stamp as many images of butterflies and bees as you would like to cut and color.  The more you do the fuller the book will appear.  I used Stampendous!® Single Butterfly (F227), Stampendous!® Cling Jumbo Butterfly Trio (CRS5044) and the bee from Stampendous!® Queen Bee Perfectly clear stamps (SSC1154)
6.     Color your butterflies and bees using your favorite coloring medium.  (I used Memento tuxedo Black stamp pad and my Copic markers, but any medium that you are most comfortable using will work fine)
7.     Cut all the images out using scissors and set aside
8.     Stamp a couple of the bird images.  I used Stampendous! ® Nestled Bird (R158) image
9.     Color the birds and cut them out
10.  Using a thin bark, grapevines, or twigs make a nest.  You can also use moss from your local craft store.  I found grape vine bark and soaked it in water to soften it up.  Wrap it around and around until it formed a nest (or ball).  Rubber band the nest to hold the shape until it dries.
11.  Take the colored bird images and place them into the nest using clear glue dots or strong adhesive
12.  Take sculpting clay and make 3 oval eggs and following instructions on package to cure the eggs.
13.  Color the eggs with your desired color and medium and place into the nest using your glue gun
14.  Using your glue gun attach the bird nest to the book
15.  Now comes the time to watch your book take flight.  Take some acetate or thick clear packaging material that you saved for a special project and cut it into ¼” strips.
16.  Fold over the end of a strip about ½” down.  Place a butterfly or bee on the end using a clear glue dot.  Cut your acetate or clear plastic about 3″ down from the image.  Do this for about half of the images
17.   Using clear glue dots adhere some of your butterfly and bee images directly on the pages of the book.  Some of the images can be coming out from in between the pages
18.  Stick the end of the acetate that does not have the image attached in between the pages using clear glue dots.  These images will appear to be “floating” above the book.  If you want the images to “come out of the middle of a page” you can cut a small slit in a page and slip it through the opening.  Fold the bottom of the acetate over about ½” from the bottom and adhere to back side of the page.
19.  Continue the process until you have used up all your images.
20.  If your pages start to slump with the weight, you can add a little adhesive in between the pages to hold them together.
21.  Now sit back and enjoy your beautiful garden that you created.

Other book ideas:

1. Add fairies to your book for a mystical garden book (Stampendous has fairies, trains and mermaids!)
2. Using a train child’s book adhere small train tracks and miniature trains to create a train book.
3.  Create a water scene using a book on fish (add mermaids for a mystical water scene)
